I had an MP3 CD player that made the same grinding noise. I the laser lends runs on a screw that spins, and it pushes the lends forward or back. I believe what is happening here is that the laser diode maybe failing, or you might have something blocking the laser beam from the lends, and it cannot read the TOC on the DVD. The computer in the player is trying to find the beginning of the disc, but if one of the above is is causing the reader to fail, it will bring the lends to the beginning…

And sometimes it will go too far, thus causing the gears to skip along the screw. At least that is what I think it’s happening. You might want to try and clean the lends, but if any debris gets inside the lends, then you might need to get a new DVD player.
